Ear training can be introduced at a very early level. I like to introduce recognition of Major and minor chords first, followed by recognition of intervals. Major and minor seems easily understood as hearing the difference between a happy or sad sound. Intervals are recognized by relating them to familiar songs, such as "Here Comes the Bride" for a perfect 4th.
I am preparing my students to play in the National Piano Guild and several of them have signed up for the ear training musicianship phase for their auditions. Piano Guild and the MTAC Certificate of Merit program motivate me to teach ear training regularly in my lessons. Here is a video clip of a student practicing recognition of intervals at her lesson.
