Beginning Piano Literature

This seven-year old second grader is learning to play pieces from Piano Literature, Vol. 1, edited by Jane Bastien. He has been a dedicated student, practicing daily, and is in his third year of lessons. I typically introduce classical pieces by master composers when a student can read well in Level 2 of the Bastien Piano Basics, which is about what I consider to be "late elementary" music. If a student has learned about phrasing, counting, and balance between the hands in method books, then teaching the early classical pieces becomes a lot easier.
