Learning to read music is similar to learning to read words. New readers of music need to be introduced to notes individually, on flashcards, for example, and then they need to develop the skill of reading music in phrases, on the page. It is very similar to learning how each letter in the alphabet sounds, when first learning to read, and then learning to sound out single words, followed by being able to read complete sentences.
An important concept to be developed while learning to read music is the skill of keeping the eyes on the music while playing.
